Each spring, a group of students work to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Students registered for the event back in November, each pledging to raise at least $100 to be able to attend the finale event.
The executive board encouraged students to raise money to come to the finale by holding events where people could sign up and having a “Why I Love St. Jude” event in Centennial Mall. Co-Executive Director Megan Hamburg explained, “The family never has to pay a bill at St. Jude. They get to focus on their child’s health and helping them to get better.”
Fundraising efforts began early with different groups working to fundraise more than their competitors. Donations were allowed up until 11:30 the night of the finale. Throughout the night Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta went back and forth as highest fundraising group. The two organizations raised so much money in the last hour that the executive board team had to change the numbers for the final reveal to reflect the new totals.
Alpha Xi Delta ended up being the top fundraising organization, raising a total of $9,702. The top fundraiser for the event, Amanda Wehby was unavailable for comment but raised $3,542.
The night ended on a happy note for the seniors on the executive board, because WKU raised more money than ever before for St. Jude. The group as a whole ended up raising $45,126.99 to help fight childhood cancer and to ensure that no family ever has to pay a bill.
